A multi-car and motorcycle crash left several injured and man dead in Cape May County, New Jersey on September 12. The accident occurred at 2:30 in the afternoon. Police say the driver of a Mercedes Benz was waiting to make a left turn at Buck's Avenue on southbound Route 47. A woman in a Mercury Sable traveling southbound on 47 crashed into the rear of the Mercedes. Both cars were forced into oncoming traffic from the impact. The two cars ran into a motorcycle in the northbound lane of Route 47. A man in a Jeep Cherokee who was following the motorcyclist collided with the bike.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Six people were hospitalized for treatment in the aftermath of the car accident. Two were flown and one was driven to Atlantic City Medical Center. Three of the injured were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center.
Emergency personnel from several agencies responded to the scene. Rescue squads from nearby Cape May Courthouse and Goshen were assisted by Belleplain and North Wildwood squads.
The New Jersey car crash occurred during the Roar to the Shore Motorcycle rally. Numerous motorcyclists were in the county for the weekend rally. State Troopers, state Department of Transportation officials, and Cape May volunteer firefighters closed the road for several hours.
The car and motorcycle accident remains under investigation by numerous agencies. The New Jersey State Police and township crash investigation teams are being assisted by the Cape May County Prosecutor in trying to determine the details and cause of the car pile-up.
